The process of accession to the European Union is not limited to fulfilling formal conditions, but also entails building strong and stable democratic institutions - said European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos after a meeting with the President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović in Brussels.

In a post on the social network X, Kos stated that she discussed with President Milatović the need for Montenegro to now prioritize fundamental reforms, especially in chapters related to democracy.

- The EU accession process isn't just about ticking boxes, it's about building democratic institutions which can withstand the demands of life as an EU member state - Kos said.

She added that in her conversation with Milatović she emphasized the importance of prioristising the fundamentals - the essential chapters on democracy.

- Without them, no country can join the EU - Kos stated in the post.
