Irena Orović, Full Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Montenegro and current Vice-Rector, has been elected Rector of the University of Montenegro for the 2027-2030 term, the university announced.

The decision was made by the University of Montenegro’s Board of Directors at a meeting chaired by Milivoje Radović. It was adopted by secret ballot, with a majority of the total number of Board members voting in favour, in accordance with the procedure set out in the University Statute.

- Previously, the Senate of the University of Montenegro had, by a majority vote, approved the proposal to elect Orović as Rector. On that occasion, she presented her programme for the university’s development, which focuses on improving the quality of education and scientific research, providing stronger support for students and academic excellence, building an inclusive and socially responsible academic community, and strengthening cooperation with the wider community and the business sector - the statement said.

Orović graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Montenegro in 2005, where she continued her academic and scientific research career. She completed her master’s degree in 2006 and defended her doctoral dissertation in time-frequency analysis and signal processing in 2010. She was appointed Full Professor in 2020.

Throughout her scientific research career, she has published around 150 academic papers, nearly 80 of which have appeared in leading international journals indexed in the SCI/SCIE databases. She has co-authored five textbooks, as well as books and chapters in monographs and an encyclopaedia published by international publishers, including Springer, CRC Press and Wiley. She has undertaken further professional development at several international scientific institutions in France, Germany and the United States.

She has received numerous national and international awards, including an award from the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts, the University of Montenegro Plaque for the best graduate in the fields of technical, natural and mathematical sciences, and medical sciences, the TRIMO Award for the best doctoral dissertation, and the Ministry of Science Award for the most successful woman in science.

She served as a member and Vice-President of the Scientific Research Council of Montenegro’s Ministry of Science and has been a member of the National Council for Higher Education since 2020. She currently serves as Vice-Rector and President of the Scientific Board of the University of Montenegro.

As a result of its efforts to improve scientific research, the University of Montenegro was awarded the prestigious „HR Excellence in Research“ logo by the European Commission in recognition of its commitment to improving working conditions for researchers and aligning its practices with the principles of the European Research Area.
